Meteorology Observation PointObserving station

Observation Station: The point from which an observation is taken.
Obscuration: The amount of sky that is hidden by snow, rain, fog, dust, haze, etc.
Obstruction To Visibility: Any form of precipitation, fog, smoke, haze, dust, dirt volcanic ash.

 


FitzRoy developed charts to allow predictions to be made using observation stations connected by telegraph to transmit to him daily reports of weather at set times.

About 100 of Australia's observation stations were selected to be Reference Climate Stations. This RCS network has been established for high quality, long-term climate monitoring, particularly climate change analysis.

PREVAILING VISIBILITY It is considered representative of visibility conditions at the observation station. It is the greatest distance that can be seen throughout at least half the horizon circle, but not necessarily continuous.

Mobile Mesonet - A group of vehicles equipped with observation stations, usually used for research. Also see mesonet.
