OMEGA BLOCK A warm high aloft which has become displaced and is on the polarward side of the jet stream. It frequently occurs in the late winter and early spring in the Northern Hemisphere.
OMEGA BLOCK - A blocking upper level high pressure ridge where two upper level low pressure areas are on each side of it. The high pressure area has a flow mimicking an upside-down horseshoe pattern similar to the greek alphabetic character omega.
Examples include a cut-off high and an omega block. WARM LOW A low pressure system that has its coldest temperatures at or near the center of circulation. Contrast with a cold low.
Related terms: cut-off high and Omega block BLOWING DUST Dust that is raised by the wind to heights of six feet or greater. It is reported as "BLDU" in an observation and on the METAR.
circulation type"A characteristic circulation feature, typically with analogs. An example of a circulation type is an omega block, characterized by a high-amplitude cut-off ridge surrounded to its east and west by high-amplitude cut-off troughs.
BLOCKING PATTERN- A situation in which the upper tropospheric flow becomes highly meridional and stagnant. Two common blocking patterns are the omega block and the rex block. Click here for more information on atmospheric blocking.
WARM HIGH A high pressure system that has its warmest temperatures at or near the center of circulation. Contrast with a cold high. Related terms: cut-off high and omega block ...
