Outflow Boundary

Meteorology OutflowOutflow winds

Outflow Boundary - A storm-scale or mesoscale boundary separating thunderstorm-cooled air (outflow) from the surrounding air; similar in effect to a cold front, with passage marked by a wind shift and usually a drop in temperature.

OUTFLOW BOUNDARY- The outflow of air from thunderstorm(s). They can act like miniature cold fronts.
OVERCAST (OVC)- Cloudy.
PACKAGE- A compilation of analysis and forecast charts and their interpretation.

Triple PointThe intersection point between two boundaries (dry line, outflow boundary, cold front, etc.), often a focus for thunderstorm development.

New thunderstorms often develop along outflow boundaries, especially near the point of intersection with another boundary (cold front, dry line, another outflow boundary, etc.; see triple point).

HP supercells frequently have been observed to develop or intensify as they moved parallel to and along a stationary outflow boundary from previous thunderstorms.

BOW - A radar image showing a region of a squall line or outflow boundary that pushes ahead of the rest of the system, forming a bow-shaped feature. Weather near the center of this bow pattern is dominated by strong and damaging outflow winds.

The downdraft and its outflow boundary then cut off the thunderstorm inflow. This causes the updraft and the thunderstorm to dissipate. Single cell thunderstorms are short-lived. They only last about 1/2 hour to an hour.

SQUALL LINE
A narrow band or line of active thunderstorms that is not associated with a cold front. It may form from an outflow boundary or the leading edge of a mesohigh.

Bubble High - a mesoscale area of high pressure, typically associated with cooler air from the rainy downdraft area of a thunderstorm or a complex of thunderstorms. A gust front or outflow boundary separates a bubble high from the surrounding air.

A mesoscale area of high pressure, typically associated with cooler air from the rainy downdraft area of a thunderstorm or a complex of thunderstorms. A gust front or outflow boundary separates a bubble high from the surrounding air.

Gust Front - The leading edge of gusty surface winds from thunderstorm downdrafts; sometimes associated with a shelf cloud or roll cloud. See also downburst, gustnado, outflow boundary.

The leading edge of the cool, gusty surface winds produced by thunderstorm downdrafts. Sometimes confused with an outflow boundary.
Related term: first gust
GUSTNADO ...

OUTFLOW Also referred to as an outflow boundary, it is the outward flow of air from a system, such as a thunderstorm. It is the result of cold downdrafts and its passage includes a wind shift and temperature drop. See bubble high or meso high.

A gust front or outflow boundary separates a bubble high from the surrounding air.
Bubbler GageIn hydrologic terms, a water stage recording device that is capable of attaching to a LARC for data automation purposes.
