Meteorology ParhelionPartial Obscuration

Partial-Beam Filling - a limitation of the rainfall estimation techniques used by NEXRAD. At far ranges from the radar, a storm may occupy only a portion of the radar beam (which may be several miles across).

partial-duration series"A series composed of all events during the period of record that exceed some set criterion, for example, all floods above a selected base, or all daily rainfalls greater than a specified amount.

Partial-Duration Flood Series A list of all flood peaks that exceed a chosen base stage or discharge, regardless of the number of peaks occurring in a year.

PARTIAL OBSCURATION Denotes that 1/8th or more of the sky, but not all of the sky, is hidden by any surface-based phenomena in the atmosphere, excluding precipitation. It often reduces horizontal visibility but not the vertical.

partial obscuration—A designation of sky cover when part of the sky is hidden by surface based obscuring phenomena.
pilot balloon—A small free-lift balloon used to determine the speed and direction of winds in the upper air.

Partial pressure of water vapor and air can also be used to express the ratio.

Relative humidity ...

The partial pressure of water vapor in an air-water system.

Semaquir Partially derived from the Greek term "sema," meaning "sign," the literal translation of "semaquir" is "signature stone." In Finland, this stone has the reputation as a weather forecasting tool.

FROSTBITE: The partial freezing of exposed parts of the body, causing injury to the skin and sometimes to deeper tissues.

Transparent or partially opaque particles of ice that range in size from that of a pea to that of golf balls.
Hair hygrometer(6) ...

Eclipse The partial or total apparent darkening of the sun when the moon comes between the sun and the Earth (solar eclipse), or the darkening of the moon when the full moon is in the Earth's shadow (lunar eclipse).

eclipse: solar=partial to total darkening of sun due to moon coming between Earth and sun, lunar=partial to total darkening due to Earth casting its shadow on a full moon.

That part of the earth that is directly in the moon's shadow will see a total eclipse of the sun, while the areas around it will see a partial eclipse. SOLSTICE The point at which the sun is the furthest on the ecliptic from the celestial equator.

The tube is partially filled with mercury and contains two electrical contacts. When the instrument is exposed to sunshine, the air in the blackened bulb is warmed more than that in the clear bulb.

pCO2 The partial pressure of CO2 in the atmosphere and the ocean. In the atmosphere, the partial pressure of CO2 is defined as the pressure the CO2 would exert if all other gases were removed.

Critical DepthIn hydrologic terms, The depth of water flowing in an open channel or conduit, partially filled, corresponding to one of the recognized critical velocities.

Vapor PressureThe partial pressure of water vapor in an air-water system.Variable WindSame as Variable Wind Direction; a condition when ...

hailstonesTransparent or partially opaque particles of ice that range in size from that of a pea to that of golf balls.

cirrostratus - (Abbreviated Cs.) A principal cloud type (cloud genus), appearing as a whitish veil, usually fibrous but sometimes smooth, that may totally cover the sky, and that often produces halo phenomena, either partial or complete.

The left to right moving condensation funnel is partially illuminated by late afternoon lighting. Note the sharp-edged precipitation curtain on the right side.

The landlord was partial to ham radio and allowed me to install a 5 element beam with a rotor on top of his home.
While living in this apartment I bought an "Ameco TX-86" transimitter in kit form. The final was a 6146 with 90 watts output on am.

Saturation The condition in which the partial pressure of any fluid constituent (water in the atmospheric air) is equal to its maximum possible partial pressure under the existing environmental conditions, ...

Aneroid Barometer: A barometer whose pressure sensor consists of an aneroid capsule, a thin, hollow disk partially evacuated and sealed.

This outgoing longwave radiation is partially trapped by greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour which then radiate the energy in all directions, warming the earth's surface and atmosphere.

BALLOON - An expandable structure filled with a partial pressure of a gas. If the gas is lighter than air, such as helium or hot air, the gas envelope will provide lift and carry a payload.

They are diffuse sometimes partially striated or fibrous. Due to their ice crystal makeup, these clouds are associated with halos--large, luminous circles or arcs of circles surrounding the sun or moon.

and operates on the principle of having changing air pressure bend a flexible metallic canister, which is partially evacuated. An external or internal spring prevents the capsule from collapsing.

Hail - Precipitation in the form of transparent or partially opaque balls or irregular lumps of concentric ice. Hail is normally defined as having a diameter of 5 millimeters or more and is produced by thunderstorms.

vapor pressure: the partial pressure exerted by just the water vapor in the air
(remember air pressure is a measure of the weight or pressure exerted by all the molecules in the air)
(e.g.

Mercury barometer- An instrument that measures changes in air pressure, consisting of a glass tube partially filled with mercury, with its open end resting in a dish of mercury.

(1) Absolute Humidity, often just referred to as 'the humidity', is a measure of the actual amount of water vapour in a particular sample of air: measured as a partial pressure (vapour pressure/hPa or millibars); ...

Closed lows aloft typically are partially or completely detached from the main westerly current, and thus move relatively slowly (see cutoff low).

Cloud Streets - Rows of cumulus or cumulus-type clouds aligned parallel to the low-level flow.

Frostbite - the freezing or local effect of partial freezing of some part of the body ...

DALTON'S LAW States that the total pressure exerted by a mixture of gases is equal to the sum of the partial pressures of the gases. Formulated by John Dalton, an English physicist.

CEILING - The height above the ground of the lowest layer of clouds that is reported as broken or overcast and is not classified as thin or partial.
CENTER OF GRAVITY (CG) - The point where the total mass of the pilot and aircraft balances.

Cirrostratus
Transparent, whitish cloud veil of fibrous (hair-like) or smooth appearance totally or partially covering the sky, and generally producing halo phenomena.

States that the total pressure exerted by a mixture of gases is equal to the sum of the partial pressures of the gases. Formulated by John Dalton, an English physicist.

CEILING: The height ascribed to the lowest layer of clouds or obscuring phenomena when it is reported as broken, overcast, or obscuration and not classified as thin or partial.

Dalton's law A scientific law that states that the total pressure exerted by a mixture of gases is equal to the sum of the partial pressures of each constituent gas.

Eye: The roughly circular area of comparatively light winds that encompasses the center of a severe tropical cyclone. The eye is either completely or partially surrounded by the eyewall cloud.

The term is usually used to distinguish a low pressure area aloft from a low-pressure trough. Closed lows aloft typically are partially or completely detached from the main westerly current, and thus move relatively slowly (see cut-off low).

The equation for the propagation of momentum is ρ(du/dt) = d(κρ(du/dz))/dz (derivatives are partials), where κ is the eddy conductivity, on the order of 5 to 20 x 104 cm2/s.
