A Pilot Report (PIREP) is a report of weather conditions encountered by an aircraft during a flight. This information is usually relayed by radio to the nearest ground station.

 


PILOT REPORT A report of in-flight weather by an aircraft pilot or crew member. Often referred to as a PIREP.

For example, in upper air measurements and observations "rabals" (radiosonde balloons), "pibals" (pilot balloons), and "pireps" (pilot reports) are used to determine the strength and direction of winds aloft.

This term is applied to those in-flight observations that are conducted on a fairly complete and formal basis, such as in aircraft weather reconnaissance. Compare pilot report, apob, aircraft sounding.
