Radiation Fog
Source: Excerpt from The Book " Weather "
Distribution: Worldwide.

Radiation Fog Fog produced results from the air near the ground being cooled to saturation by contact with the cold ground. The cooling of the ground results from night time loss of heat from the Earth to space (terrestrial radiation).

RADIATION FOG
Fog that is created when radiational cooling at the earth's surface lowers the temperature of the air near the ground to or below its dew point.

Radiation fog
Occurs on calm, clear nights when a moist layer at the surface is cooled to its dew point.

A fog that forms when outgoing longwave radiation cools the near-surface air below its dew point temperature.

RADIATION FOG: See ground fog.
RADIOSONDE: An instrument attached to a weather balloon that transmits pressure, humidity, temperature and winds as it ascends.

Radiation fog Fog produced over land when radiational cooling reduces the air temperature to or below its dew point. It is also known as ground fog and valley fog.

Radiation fog A ground-level fog formed by nocturnal radiational cooling of a humid air layer so that its relative humidity approaches 100 %; sometimes called ground fog.
Radio waves Long-wavelength, low-frequency electromagnetic waves.

radiation fogFog characteristically resulting when radiational cooling of the earth's surface lowers the air temperature near the ground to or below its initial dew point on calm, clear nights.

Radiation Fog- Fog produced over the land by the cooling of the lower atmosphere as it comes in contact with the ground. Also known as ground fog.

Radiation fog is formed by the cooling of land after sunset by thermal (infrared) radiation in calm conditions with clear sky. The cool ground then produces condensation in the nearby air by heat conduction.

Radiation Fog: Fog formed over land at nights characterized by light winds, clear sky and moist air in the low levels of the atmosphere.

Radiation fog: a fog that forms when outgoing longwave radiation cools the near-surface air below its dew point temperature.

Radiation Fog
Fog which forms over the land in still conditions.

GROWING SEASON
Considered the period of the year during which the temperature of cultivated vegetation remains sufficiently high enough to allow plant growth.

Also known as radiation fog. GustA brief sudden increase in wind speed. Generally the duration is less than 20 seconds and the fluctuation greater than 10 miles per hour.

Also known as radiation fog, and in parts of California as tule fog.GFS(Global Forecast System) One of the operational forecast models run at NCEP. The GFS is run four times daily, with forecast output out to 384 hours.

This may occur through cooling of the air to a little beyond its dewpoint (producing advection fog, radiation fog or upslope fog), or by adding moisture and thereby elevating the dewpoint (producing steam fog or frontal fog).

Radiation fog might be rather shallow over damp and wet ground after a rainy night and is sometimes called precipitation fog.

Unlike radiation fog, advection fog may form under cloudy skies and with moderate to strong winds. Initial stability is relatively unimportant since low level cooling makes the air unstable near the ground.

Fog - Radiation: A form of fog caused by the cooling of moist air to below its dew point by the process of heat radiation. Radiation fog usually forms near the surface at night under clear skies and light wind conditions. Also known as ground fog.

(abbrev. GF) Fog produced over the land by the cooling of the lower atmosphere as it comes in contact with the ground. Also known as radiation fog, and in parts of California as tule fog.

and the leading cause of weather-related casualties in that state. It forms at night and in the early morning when the ground cools, lowering the air temperature near the ground to or below its initial dew point. Related term: radiation fog ...

(advection) of a cold air mass with air temperature below 0°C. This type of frost is responsible for causing damage to agricultural areas of south Florida and the Rio Grande Valley of Texas during cold polar outbreaks. Compare radiation fog.

GROUND FOG
Fog created when radiational cooling at the earth's surface lowers the temperature of the air near the ground to or below its initial dew point. Primarily takes place at night or early morning.

Tule FogRadiation fog in the Central Valley of California. It forms during night and morning hours in late fall and winter months following the first significant rainfall. A leading cause of weather related casualties in California.
