Meteorology RadiosondesRain Advisory

Rain and Hail liquid and ice precipitation
Rain develops when growing cloud droplets become too heavy to remain in the cloud and as a result, fall toward the surface as rain.

A rain shadow (or more accurately, precipitation shadow) is a dry region on the surface of the Earth that is leeward or behind a mountain with respect to the prevailing wind direction.

Will a Rain Guage Measure Snow?
If it snows where you live, most rain gauges will not be able to measure the snow fall; snow will block the opening of the collection funnel. However, special snow gauges are available to measure this.

Rain and disease
Excessive rain not only causes floods with their often widespread devastation, but may also assist in the spread of disease. Wet seasons produce large areas of stagnant water, which can become breeding grounds for mosquitos.

A device-usually a cylindrical container-for measuring rain-fall.

RAIN - Precipitation of liquid water particles which, in contrast to drizzle, are widely separated and larger in size.
RAINBOW- Optical phenomenon when light is refracted and reflected by moisture in the air into concentric arcs of color.

Rain A form of precipitation consisting of liquid water droplets having diameters between 0.5 and 5.0 mm (0.02 and 0.2 in).
Rain gauge An device - usually a cylindrical container - for collecting and measuring rainfall.

rain—A form of precipitation; drops are larger than drizzle and fall in relatively straight, although not necessarily vertical, paths as compared to drizzle which falls in irregular paths.
rain shower—See shower.

Rain Forest An evergreen woodland of the tropics distinguished by a continuous leaf canopy and an average rainfall of about 100 inches per year. Rain forests play an important role in the global environment.

Rain - Precipitation in the form of liquid drops the diameter of which must be .5 millimeters or greater. Implies a steady precipitation that might last for several hours.

RA- Rain
RADIATIONAL COOLING- The earth's surface cooling by emitting longwave radiation. The best radiational cooling occurs on clear nights.

acid rain: rain having a pH lower than 5.6 (the pH of natural rainwater), usually caused by sulfuric acid and/or nitric acid from air pollution.

acid rain: rain that has become acidic after contact with certain atmospheric gases (primarily sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxides).
afforestation: process of establishing a forest.

Acid rain
Rain which is acidic as a result of pollution
Air pressure ...

Acid rain Cloud or rain droplets containing pollutants, such as oxides of sulfur and nitrogen, to make them acidic.

Acid Rain
Rain containing relatively high concentrations of acid-forming chemicals that have been released into the atmosphere and combined with water vapor; harmful to the environment.
ACLD ...

heavy rain - Rain with a rate of accumulation exceeding a specific value that is geographically dependent.
height - See altitude, elevation.
helm - See helm wind.

Excess Rain
In hydrologic terms, effective rainfall in excess of infiltration capacity.
Excessive Heat ...

Excess Rain: Effective rainfall in excess of infiltration capacity.

Rain: Water vapor condensed in the atmosphere that falls to the earth in the form of drops (more than 0.5 mm [1/50 inch] in diameter). Depending on the average cycle of its accumulation in the rain gauge, it can be light (up to 2.5mm), moderate 2.

Rain or snow with a pH value of less than 5.6.
Adiabatic Temperature Change ...

Rain gauge- An instrument used to measure the amount of precipitation, consisting of an open-ended can topped by a collecting funnel and having a collecting tube and measuring scale inside.

RAIN: Liquid water precipitation generally with a diameter greater than 0.5 mm.
RELATIVE HUMIDITY: The percent of the amount of water vapor in the air compared to the capacity for water vapor in the air.

Rainbow- An arc or circle of colored light caused by the refraction of light by water droplets in the air.

Rain: precipitation that falls to earth in drops more than 0.5 mm in diameter.

Rain - Liquid precipitation in the form of water drops that falls from clouds for several hours.

Rain or drizzle that falls in liquid form and then freezes upon striking a cold object or ground. Both can produce a coating of ice on objects which is called glaze.
Front(6)
The transition zone between two distinct air masses.

Rain Gauge - An instrument used to measure rainfall amounts.
Rainbow - Optical phenomena when light is refracted and reflected by moisture in the air into concentric arcs of color.

Rain that falls as liquid and freezes upon impact to form a coating of glaze on the colder ground or other exposed surfaces. It is reported as "FZRA" in an observation and on the METAR.
FRESH WATER ...

Rain and drizzle have drops much larger than the wavelength of visible light, so they will not show evident diffraction effects. They will, however, exhibit the rainbow and other reflection-refraction phenomena, as will ice crystals.
