resistance thermometer
An electrical-type thermometer that utilzes a thermal element consisting of a material whose electrical resistance varies with temperature.

Remote Sensing The technology of acquiring data and information about an object or phenomena by a device that is not in physical contact with it.

active system"A remote sensing system that transmits its own electromagnetic energy, then measures the properties of the returned radiation.

radarAn instrument useful for remote sensing of meteorological phenomena. It operates by sending radio waves and monitoring those returned by such reflecting objects as raindrops within clouds.

This sounding or vertical profile is usually obtained by a balloon-borne instrument, but can also be measured using remote sensing equipment.

The climate data that NCDC receives are from a wide variety of sources, including satellites, radar, remote sensing systems, NWS cooperative observers, aircraft, ships, radiosonde, wind profiler, rocketsonde, solar radiation networks, ...

ERS - Abbreviation for European Remote Sensing Satellites.
ESSA - The first series of operational meteorological satellites launched by the United States.

An instantaneous or near-instantaneous sounding of temperature as a function of height. This sounding or vertical profile is usually obtained by a balloon-borne instrument, but can also be measured using remote sensing equipment.
