Rossby waves are generated by atmospheric forcing from winds and buoyancy effects from solar heating and are the principal means by which localised climatic effects drive the global response of the ocean.

A series of troughs and ridges on quasi-horizontal surfaces in the major belt of upper tropospheric westerlies. The waves are thousands of kilometers long and have significant latitudinal amplitude.

ROSSBY WAVE - A wave or undulation in a fluid medium characterized by a change in the flow of that medium. Large ocean currents such as the Gulf Stream often meander like a river without a bank.

In meteorology, this applies to atmospheric waves, such as long waves, short waves, Rossby waves, and cyclonic waves. In oceanography, this applies to waves generated by mechanical means, such as currents, turbidity, and the wind.

Rossby Waves:Discovered in the late 1930's by: Carl G. Rossby: a Swidish-American Meteorologist for whom they are named. Rossby Waves occur well above the friction level. They are steering currents and are at the 500 mb 18,000 feet level and higher.
