Saffir-Simpson scales
Hurricanes not only have names, they also have numbers. For example, hurricanes Hugo in 1989 and Andrew in 1992 were a Category 4 hurricanes, Fran in 1996 was an intense Category 3 and Camille in 1969 Category 5 monster.

Saffir-Simpson Scale
This scale was developed in an effort to estimate the possible damage a hurricane's sustained winds and storm surge could do to a coastal area.

Saffir-Simpson Scale: a hurricane intensity scale created to quantify the amount of damage they will cause upon landfall.

Saffir-Simpson Scale
The scale system used by the National Weather Service to give public safety officials an assessment of the potential wind and storm surge damage from a hurricane.

Saffir-Simpson Scale - A hurricane intensity scale that relates hurricane damage to wind speeds and central air pressures.
Category 1: wind speeds 74-95 m.p.h.
Category 2: wind speeds 96-110 m.p.h.

SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE DAMAGE-POTENTIAL SCALE Developed in the early 1970s by Herbert Saffir, a consulting engineer, and Robert Simpson, then Director of the National Hurricane Center, it is a measure of hurricane intensity on a scale of 1 to 5.

Hurricanes are rated on a Saffir-Simpson scale measures hurricane wind speeds based on structural effects. F1 is for 74-95 MPH winds, F2 is for 96-112 MPH, F3 is for 111-130 MPH, F4 is for 131-155 MPH, and F5 is over 155 MPH.

Hurricane: Saffir-Simpson Scale. 1-5 28. Hurricane: Spanish For Evil Spirt. 29. Hurricane: Storm surge maybe up to 50 miles wide. 30. Hurricane: Storm Surge moves inland 300 to 700 feet. 31. Hurricane: Storm Surge strongest part of storms. 32.
