A Scale Height is a term often used in scientific contexts for a distance over which a quantity decreases by a factor of e. It is usually denoted by the capital letter H.

It is also the level at which the horizontal mean free path of an atmospheric particle equals the scale height of the atmosphere. The critical level of escape is the base of the exosphere.
