Short wave

Meteorology Shelf CloudShort-Fuse Warning

short wave - 1. (Or minor wave.) With regard to atmospheric circulation, a progressive wave in the horizontal pattern of air motion with dimensions of cyclonic scale, as distinguished from a long wave.

SHORT WAVE A progressive wave of smaller amplitude, wave length, and duration than a long wave. It moves in the same direction as the basic current in which it is embedded and may induce upward vertical motion ahead of it.

Short Wave Fade (SWF)
In solar-terrestrial terms, a particular ionospheric solar flare effect under the broad category of sudden ionospheric disturbances (SIDs) whereby short-wavelength radio transmissions, VLF, through HF, ...

Short waves Relatively small short-wavelength ripples (troughs and ridges) superimposed on long waves in the planetary-scale westerlies; they propagate with the air flow through long waves in the middle and upper troposphere.

SHORT WAVE - A radio frequency spectrum near the upper end of the HF band. See also HF. In meteorology, refers to a small-scale synoptic low pressure trough. See also WAVE.

X Rays: Short wavelength electromagnetic radiation.
Weather Glossary...

Global (short wave) radiation includes both that radiation energy reaching the ground directly from the sun, and that received indirectly from the sky, scattered downwards by clouds, dust particles etc.
Gust ...

A single wave, or short wave train that has developed from either a special combination of wind swells or interactions of tides with local bathymetrie. On the surface these consist of a well-defined set of wave crests.

Gamma RayA type of electromagnetic radiation with a very short wavelength and high energy level. Generally, emitted during radioactive decay of a substance.

Radiation from the Sun has a short wavelength (ultra-violet) while energy re-radiated from the Earth's surface and the atmosphere has a long wavelength (infra-red).

These boundaries are often associated with a strong, migratory surface low pressure system and strong short wave trough at 500 mb (strong dynamic forcing).

X-ray Electromagnetic radiation of very short wavelength, lying within the wavelength interval of 0.1 to 1.5 angstroms (between gamma rays and ultraviolet radiation).

The formation of a mid-latitude storm is triggered by a short wave eastward moving disturbance embedded in the upper flow, with consequent distortion of the pre-existing baroclinic (i.e. frontal) zone.

Cloud radars typically employ short wavelengths of 1 cm and shorter (e.g., Ka band) and are designed for short-range, high-resolution measurements.

greenhouse gas: gases in the atmosphere that are more transparent to the short wavelength radiation (mostly visible light) from the sun, than to the long wavelength radiation (infrared radiation) leaving the Earth.

The portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that has a very short wave length. It has a wavelength longer than gamma rays, yet shorter than visible light.

PHASING- When two separate short waves come together to form one wave. Also, when upper and lower level features are positioned so that each provides energy to the other, it is said that the features are in phase with one another.

There is generally a radiation code, split into solar/short wave and terrestrial/infra-red/long wave
parametrizations handle other processes, these include :
convection
land surface processes and hydrology ...

Radiation has differing characteristics depending upon the wavelength. Radiation from the Sun has a short wavelength (ultra-violet) while energy re-radiated from the Earth's surface and the atmosphere has a long wavelength (infra-red).

Baroclinic - A state of the atmosphere in which isotherms intersect isobars. The geostrophic wind results in temperature advection, and hence disturbances modify with time. Short waves are baroclinic and therefore modify.

Atmospheric Wave - Any pattern with some roughly identifiable periodicity in time and/or space. In meteorology, waves in the horizontal flow pattern (e.g., Rossby wave, long wave, short wave).
