The Northeast Snowfall Impact Scale was created to measure snowstorms in the U.S. Northeast in much the same way the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale records hurricane intensity.

snowfall - 1. In surface weather observations, usually expressed as centimeters or inches of snow depth per six-hourly period. 2. The accumulation of snow during a specified period of time.

SNOWFALL The rate at which snow falls, usually expressed in inches of snow depth over a six hour period.
SNOWFLAKES An ice crystal or an aggregate of ice crystals which fall from clouds.

Snowfall- The depth of new snow that has accumulated since the previous day or since the previous observation.
Snowflake- White ice crystals that have combined in a complex branched hexagonal form.

Snowfall totaled 28.3 inches with the largest single accumulation of 6.3 inches falling March 8. While it was an inconvenience, it came nowhere near last year's total of 45.8 inches that included the heaviest snowfall in the valley's history, 25.

snowfall accumulating to 4" or more in depth in 12 hours or less; or
snowfall accumulating to 6" or more in depth in 24 hours or less ...

Shower- Snowfall or rainfall or brief duration that can either be heavy or light.
Sleet- Precipitation consisting of ice particles formed when raindrops freeze.
Smog- Air pollution caused by a mixture of smoke and fog.

Low level snowfalls, though rare, have recurred throughout the century, and affected a surprisingly large area of the country. Some of the more memorable events follow: ...

Lake effect snowfall is good example of the hydrologic cycle at work. Below is a vertical cross-section summarizing the processes of the hydrologic cycle that contribute to the production of lake effect snow.

Rainfall or snowfall from clouds, induced by topographic uplift.
Orographic uplift(6)
The lifting of air over a topographic barrier. Clouds that form in this lifting process are called orographic clouds.

Lake Effect Snowfall: Snowfalls along the lee shore of a lake or downwind some distance from the shore caused by the modification of cold, subfreezing air by the relatively warmer lake water.

Flurries Light snowfall that generally does not produce a measurable accumulation.

Drifting snowUneven distribution of snowfall caused by strong surface winds. Drifting snow does not reduce visibility. In Canada, it is defined as snow blown to a height of less than two meters.

of a thing in specific units, when such magnitude or position undergoes change, for example: The elevation of a water surface, the velocity of flowing water, the pressure of water, the amount or intensity of precipitation, the depth of snowfall, etc.

Snow FlurriesSnow flurries are an intermittent light snowfall of short duration (generally light snow showers) with no measurable accumulation (trace category).

Snow board A flat, solid, white material, such as painted plywood, approximately two feet square, which is laid on the ground or snow surface to obtain more accurate measurements of snowfall and water content.

Drifting SnowDrifting snow is an uneven distribution of snowfall/snow depth caused by strong surface winds. Drifting snow may occur during or after a snowfall. Drifting snow is usually associated with blowing snow.

accumulation (glacial) All processes, which include snowfall, condensation, avalanching, snow transport by wind, and freezing of liquid water, that add snow or ice to a glacier, floating ice, or snow cover.

Intense snowfall rates often occur during these situations. THUNDERSTORM Produced by a cumulonimbus cloud, it is a storm of relatively short duration characterized by thunder, lightning, gusty surface winds, turbulence, hail, icing, precipitation, ...

It is a method for forecasting the amount of snowfall expected from a given winter storm system.

Heavy Snow Discussion (HSD): This message discusses the potential for heavy snowfall in the contiguous United States. The threshold value in this product for heavy snow is 4 inches or more in a 12-hour period.

Winter Storm Warning- Issued if the event will be entirely heavy snowfall.

Snow Advisory - Issued when snowfall is expected to exceed 2 inches but not expected to exceed 5 inches.

Heavy Snow- usually means snowfall of four air inches or more in twelve hours or less, or six inches or more in twenty-four hours or less in lower elevation; in higher elevations it means twelve inches or more in twelve hours or less, ...

Glacier A multi-year surplus accumulation of snowfall in excess of snowmelt on land and resulting in a mass of ice at least 0.1 km2 in area that shows some evidence of movement in response to gravity. A glacier may terminate on land or in water.

More specifically, lake effect often refers to the generation of sometimes spectacular snowfall amounts to the lee of the Great Lakes as cold air passes over the lake surface, extracting heat and moisture, ...

Drifting Snow - An uneven amount of snowfall or existing snow on the ground caused by strong winds. Drifting snow can be very dangerous for drivers.
Drizzle - Light rain consisting of water droplets that are very small.

DRIFTING SNOW: The uneven distribution of snowfall. Snow depth caused by strong surface winds.
DRIZZLE: Very small, numerous, slowly falling water droplets, with diameters less than 0.5 millimeters.

Orographic precipitation
Rainfall or snowfall from clouds, induced by topographic uplift.
P
Permafrost
A layer of soil beneath the earth's surface that remains frozen throughout the year.

Snow flurries are an intermittent light snowfall of short duration (generally light snow showers) with no measurable accumulation (trace category).
Flux ...

Gauges can be adapted to collect snow for the determination of liquid water equivalent of snowfall. Recording rain gauges measure precipitation rates over fixed time intervals to provide an indication of rainfall intensity .

Indicates the 540 decametre line on the 1000-500 thickness chart. Often used as a rough guide to determine when an airmass is cold enough to produce snowfalls on the Australian southern alpine areas.

glacier: a large mass of ice (at least .1km^2) set in motion by the Earth's gravity, which is a result of accumulated snowfall with little snow melt.

Lake effect - The effect of a lake (usually a large one) in modifying the weather near the shore and down wind. It is often refers to the enhanced rain or snow that falls downwind from the lake. This effect can also result in enhanced snowfall along ...

A mesoscale weather system produced by strong convection currents that reach to great altitudes within the troposphere. Consists of cumulonimbus clouds accompanied by lightning and thunder and often, locally heavy rainfall (or snowfall) and gusty ...

blizzards, heavy blowing snow, heavy rains, frost, cold waves, freezing rain, severe thunderstorms and strong winds - according to thresholds established for local and regional public needs. In Vancouver a warning is issued for an expected snowfall ...

Reports of rainfall (or melted snowfall) should be in mm. Dimensions of solid precipitation (e.g. hail), should be cm, as should snow depth.

heavy snowfall) is predicted but does not occur.Buttress DamButtress dams are comprised of reinforced masonry or stonework built against concrete. They are usually in the form of flat decks or multiple arches.
