SPECIFIC WEATHER INSTRUMENTS
KestrelŪ 4000 Wind Instrument This instrument measures barometric pressure, altitude, density altitude, temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind chill, dew point, wet bulb, and heat index.

SPECI - In the METAR observation program, a surface observation issued on a nonroutine basis as dictated by changing meteorological conditions.

SPECIFIC HUMIDITY The ratio of the density of the water vapor to the density of the air, a mix of dry air and water vapor. It is expressed in grams per gram or in grams per kilograms.

SPECIFIC HUMIDITY: In a system of moist air, the dimensionless ratio of the mass of water vapor to the total mass of the system.

SPECIAL MARINE WARNING - Special warning product from the National Weather Service regarding dangerous conditions for mariners usually caused by thunderstorms with winds at or above 35 Knots (38 MPH) or waterspout activity.

ASOS and AWSS units report hourly, usually a few minutes before the hour, with additional SPECI (special) reports when significant changes in weather occur during the hour, such as rain changing to snow, approaching thunder, or heavy rain.

METARS are normally issued either hourly or half hourly, but if there is a significant change in conditions at the site, a SPECI (special report) may be issued. See also SYNOP.

This lithometeor is encoded BN as an obstruction to vision in a surface aviation weather observation and as BLSA as an obstruction to vision in a METAR or SPECI observation. In its extreme form, blowing sand constitutes a sandstorm.
