Cirrostratus Clouds sheet-like and nearly transparent Cirrostratus are sheet-like, high-level clouds composed of ice crystals.
stratus clouds: a low cloud type that forms a gray layer with a uniform base. Does not usually produce precipitation. Overcast skies. temperature inversion: when a layer of air has a temperature increase instead of decrease with altitude.
Altostratus clouds (As) Middle layer clouds that are uniformly gray or bluish white. Aneroid barometer A portable instrument that utilizes a flexible metal chamber and spring to measure air pressure; may be used as an altimeter.
STRATUS CLOUDS - Widespread layer clouds formed when a layer of air rises slowly. Usually smooth conditions are associated with stratus clouds. STROBE - A blinking light mounted on an aircraft to improve visibility.
Stratus Clouds - Low-lying, gray and sheetlike clouds that often produce drizzle. Stratus clouds are a principle cloud type. Summer - The warmest season of the year. Summer officially begins in late June and last until late September.
Nimbostratus clouds might consist entirely of cloud droplets or raindrops, or of ice crystals and snowflakes.
Chinook arch - Altostratus clouds downwind of a mountain range. Visible gap between overhead sheet and upwind horizon, when viewed from the ground below.
They include all varieties of cirrus, cirrocumulus, and cirrostratus clouds. CIRROCUMULUS A cirriform cloud with vertical development, appearing as a thin sheet of small white puffs which give it a rippled effect.
Chinook ArchA foehn cloud formation appearing as a bank of altostratus clouds east of the Rocky Mountains, heralding the approach of a chinook. It forms in the rising portion of standing waves on the lee side of the mountains.
Solar Halo: A ring around the Sun produced by cirrostratus clouds which consist of ice crystals Solar Wind: Is produced by charged ion particles escaping from the Sun. Solar Wind: The solar wind moves on average about 400 kilometers per sec/ 250 mps.
Stratus clouds have characteristically low vertical velocities, usually less than 1 m s-1. When the sun is seen through the cloud, its outline is clearly discernible, and it may be accompanied by corona phenomena.
Clouds fall into two general categories: sheetlike or layer-looking stratus clouds (stratus means layer) and cumulus clouds (cumulus means piled up). These two cloud types are divided into four more groups that describe the cloud's altitude.
A sundog is a relatively common atmospheric optical phenomenon associated with the reflection/refraction of sunlight by the numerous small ice crystals that make up cirrus or cirrostratus clouds.
It usually falls from low stratus clouds and is frequently accompanied by low visibility and fog. In weather observations, drizzle is classified as 1) light, the rate of fall being from a trace to 0.
Clouds can be categorized into two general groups: cumulus clouds (tall, cotton ball) and stratus clouds (layered); these can be divided even further to 4 sub-groups describing altitude: 20, ...
Stratus clouds are generally diffuse and dull. This cloud formation has little structure and looks like fog, except that it is above the ground.
Drizzle - Precipitation from stratus clouds consisting of numerous minute, fine water droplets which appear to float. In drizzle, the droplets are much smaller than in rain. Drought - an extended period of dry weather.
Middle Clouds In the middle family are the altostratus, altocumulus, and nimbostratus clouds. The height of the bases of these clouds ranges from 6,500 to 23,000 feet in middle latitudes.
Drizzle - Precipitation from stratus clouds consisting of tiny droplets. Dry Adiabatic Rate - The rate of adiabatic cooling or warming in unsaturated air. The rate of temperature change is 1°C per 100 meters.
The elements of cumulus and stratus clouds that appear in irregular fragments, as if they had been shred or torn. Never appears in cirrus clouds. Also known as scud. Related terms: cumulus fractus and stratus fractus FREEZING DRIZZLE ...
Slowly falling precipitation in the form of tiny water droplets with diameters less than 0.02 inches or 0.5 millimeters. It falls from stratus clouds and is often associated with low visibility and fog.
FOG - A low cloud that is at or near ground level. Resembles stratus clouds and is formed by moisture condensation close to the earth's surface.
CUMULUS FRACTUS Cumulus clouds that appear in irregular fragments, as if they had been shred or torn. Also appears in stratus clouds (called stratus fractus), but not in cirrus clouds.
or arcs centered on the sun or moon, caused by the refraction or reflection of light by ice crystals suspended in the earth's atmosphere and exhibiting prismatic coloration ranging from red inside to blue outside. Often seen in Cirro-stratus clouds ...
The cloud form is gray, with a low, ill-defined ceiling. Generally, it completely obscures the sun. Nimbostratus clouds bring rain, snow or sleet. On satellite imagery, they show up as darker clouds when compared to the higher, colder cloud tops.
