STRONG THUNDERSTORM - A thunderstorm with winds gusting at or over 38 MPH but not as high as 58 MPH. If a thunderstorm has hail less than 3/4", it must also be classified as a strong thunderstorm.

 


The central dense overcast is the concentrated area of strong thunderstorm activity near the center of a tropical cyclone;[10] in weaker tropical cyclones, the CDO may cover the center completely.

It is a stability index used to determine thunderstorm potential.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM: A strong thunderstorm with wind gusts in excess of 58 mph (50 knots) and/or hail with a diameter of 3/4" or more. A thunderstorm with winds greater than 39 mph and/or hail greater than " inch is defined as approaching severe.

For example, if the rising parcel has an temperature of -5°C when it reaches 500 millibars, but the actual temperature at 500 millibars is -11°C, then the lifted index is -6 Kelvin (or K) indicating the potential for strong thunderstorms.

Squall Line - A line of thunderstorms sometimes several hundred miles long that can produce strong thunderstorms and sometimes severe weather.
Stable Air - Air that is colder than its surroundings and is resistant to upward movement.

Dryline-A region where there is a strong gradient in dew point temperatures. It is often found in a region where strong thunderstorms develop.

Often times these clouds escape from the main air flow aloft and may linger over areas of the landscape already saturated by the earlier passage of strong thunderstorms. They typically only effect small areas ranging up to less than 100 square miles.
