Sun Dog: A popular term used to describe the parhelion, a bright portion of a solar halo which forms on points 22° either side of the sun and at the same elevation.

SUN DOG Either of two colored luminous spots that appear at roughly 22° on both sides of the sun at the same elevation. They are caused by the refraction of sunlight passing through ice crystals.
