Synoptic chart
Any map or chart that depicts meteorological or atmospheric conditions.

SYNOPTIC SCALE The size of migratory high and low pressure systems in the lower troposphere that cover a horizontal area of several hundred miles or more. Related terms: macroscale, mesoscale, and storms ...

SUB-SYNOPTIC LOW- A relative small area of surface low pressure. They are also referred to as mesolows.

SYNOPSynoptic - relating to the general weather pattern over a wide region, such as areas of high and low pressure or frontal boundaries, as opposed to mesoscale or smaller features such as a thunderstorm.

(1): SYNOPTIC-SCALE MODIFICATION of the temperature structure of the lower troposphere.

Past weather Predominant characteristic of the weather which had existed at an observing station during a given period of time (during the preceding hour or six hours), specified in the international SYNOP code.

The World Meteorological Organization acts to standardize the instrumentation, observing practices and timing of these observations worldwide. Stations either report hourly in METAR reports, or every six hours in SYNOP reports.
