Synoptic chart A weather chart reflecting the state of the atmosphere over a large area at a given moment.
SYNOPTIC CHART Any map or chart that depicts meteorological or atmospheric conditions over a large area at any given time.
Synoptic Chart Chart showing meteorological conditions over a region at a given time; weather map.
synoptic chart—A chart, such as the familiar weather map, which depicts the distribution of meteorological conditions over an area at a given time. T target—In radar, any of the many types of objects detected by radar.
Synoptic chart from 1874. 1820 - John Herapath develops some ideas in the kinetic theory of gases but mistakenly associates temperature with molecular momentum rather than kinetic energy; his work receives little attention other than from Joule.
Synoptic Chart: Chart or map in which selected meteorological elements are represented over a large region at a given moment.
"Synoptic chart for the storms of late June 1967. The tight gradient indicates very strong winds; the long "fetch" of these strong winds across the oceans off eastern Australia resulted in huge swells that greatly damaged Gold Coast beaches." ...
An analyzed synoptic chart of surface weather observations. A surface chart shows the distribution of sea-level pressure (therefore, the position of highs, lows, ridges and troughs) and the location and nature of fronts and air masses.
Geostrophic-wind scale A graphical device used for the determination of the speed of the geostrophic wind from the isobar or contour-line spacing on a synoptic chart.
Thus, the analysis of synoptic charts may consist, for example, of the drawing and the interpretation of the patterns of wind, pressure, pressure change, temperature, humidity, clouds, and hydrometeors, ...
Shown on a synoptic chart as a trough. Dry lines are common across inland QLD during the warmer months of the year where convection will occur on the eastern side. An important factor in severe weather frequency in the Great Plains (US).
the earth's surface, implying inclement and possibly destructive weather. There are at least three somewhat different viewpoints of storms. 1) In synoptic meteorology, a storm is a complete individual disturbance identified on synoptic charts as a ...
Surface weather chart: an analyzed synoptic chart of surface weather observations.
The temperature so read is usually called 'the air temperature' and it is these values that appear, for example, in the World Cities reports in newspapers/teletext, or plotted on standard synoptic charts, ...
Prognostic Chart and Agnostic Chart A prognostic chart, often referred to by meteorologists as a "prog," depicts the expected pressure pattern or height pattern of a given synoptic chart (typically scaled to a country, a continent, ...
Isobars are lines of equal pressure plotted on a synoptic chart. Isobaric patterns of pressure are still the most common way to understand the movement of high- and low-pressure areas, indicating an approaching front or depression.
