Tropical air masses are generally restricted to the southern states during much of the winter. However, southerly winds ahead of migrating cyclones occasionally transport a tropical air mass northward during the winter season.
TROPICAL AIR MASS An air mass that forms in the tropics or subtropics over the low latitudes. Maritime tropical air is produced over oceans and is warm and humid, while continental tropical air is formed over arid regions and is very hot and dry.
tropical air - A type of air mass with characteristics developed over low latitudes. Maritime tropical air (mT), the principal type, is produced over the tropical and subtropical seas.
Tropical Air- an air mass that has warm temperatures and high humidities and develops over tropical or sub-tropical areas. Trough- an elongated relatively low pressure area between two high pressure areas.
Tropical Air Mass of air which has been over tropical or subtropical regions for several days and which, therefore, has become fairly warm and moist. Tropical Depression Wind speed up to 33 knots (38 mph).
Tropical air mass A warm-to-hot air mass that forms in the subtropics. Tropical depression A mass of thunderstorms and clouds generally with a cyclonic wind circulation of between 20 and 34 knots ...
SUBTROPICAL AIR An air mass that forms over the subtropical region. The air is typically warm with a high moisture content due to the low evaporative process.
Tropical Air: Mass of air originating in low latitudes, normally in the Subtropical High in latitudes 30º and 35º.
Tropical Air- Warm, humid air masses that form in tropical regions. Tropical Cyclone- A low-pressure system that forms in the tropics. Tropical Depression- A tropical cyclone with winds that do not exceed 38 miles per hour.
Maritime Tropical air forms over oceans in the tropics. Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. These air masses contain fog or mist, low stratus clouds, poor visibility, high humidity, with rain and drizzle.
Maritime tropical air(6) Warm, humid air mass that forms over tropical and subtropical oceans. Mauna Loa Record(5) ...
Maritime Tropical Air Mass - an air mass characterized by warm, moist air Maximum Thermometer - a thermometer designed to register the maximum temperature during a given interval of time (generally a day) ...
Continental tropical air mass - hot dry air found in places like the Sahara desert. Maritime polar air mass - cool wet air. Think England. Continental polar air mass - cold dry air which sometimes produces snow.
Polar FrontA semipermanent, semicontinuous front that separates tropical air masses from polar air masses.
A summer high over the North American continent brings moist, unstable maritime tropical air from the Gulf over the Mississippi Valley. The thunderstorms that result are the principal source of moisture for this region.
a maritime tropical air mass would be warm and moist. The terms refer to the fact that air masses acquire the properties of the terrain over which they move.
A cold front is the delineation between cold polar air moving towards the equator and undercutting warm tropical air moving poleward. The temperature differences across a cold front can be extreme and associated with strong winds.
Marked by a concentration of isotherms and strong vertical shear, this jet is the boundary between the polar air and the subtropical air.
equatorial air"According to some authors, the air of the doldrums or the equatorial trough, to be distinguished somewhat vaguely from the tropical air of the trade-wind zones.
The boundary between subtropical air and tropical air, marked by a concentration of isotherms and vertical shear. Migrates north in the southern hemisphere winter. Sublimation ...
Dryline A narrow zone in the atmosphere along which there is an abrupt change in moisture as when dry continental tropical air converges with humid maritime tropical air. The denser cT air acts to lift the less dense roT air producing ...
Jet stream - An upper-level stream of fast moving air, the result of a strong meridional pressure gradient. The polar jet stream separates cold polar air from warm tropical air.
A body of air that extends hundreds or thousands of kilometers horizontally and is relatively uniform in temperature and moisture content (see continental arctic, continental polar, continental tropical, maritime polar, and maritime tropical air ...
Because atmospheric pressure decreases more quickly with height in cold/polar air than warm/sub-tropical air, there arises a pressure differential, which gives rise to intense pressure gradients at altitude, and hence the very strong winds observed.
The scattered thunderstorms that develop in the summer are called air-mass thunderstorms because they form in warm, maritime tropical air masses away from other weather fronts.
Some authors may include equatorial (E), monsoon (M), or superior air (S) in their classifications. Others prefer to omit the arctic (A) type and describe all air masses on the basis of polar and tropical air, separated by the polar front.
low-level jetA regular, strong, nighttime, northward flow of maritime tropical air over the sloping Great Plains of the central United States. The wind increases to a peak in the lowest kilometer and then decreases above.
Contrast with tropical air mass.Continental ShelfThe zone bordering a continent and extending to a depth, usually around 100 FM, from which there is a steep descent toward greater depth.
