Troposphere - The layer of the atmosphere from the ground to around 33,000 feet (10 kilometers). This is where much of the weather we experience occurs.

TROPOPAUSE The boundary zone or transition layer between the troposphere and the stratosphere. This is characterized by little or no increase or decrease in temperature or change in lapse rate with increasing altitude.

TROPOPAUSE - The top of the troposphere denoted by a change from decreasing temperatures to increasing temperatures with height. This forms the GLOBAL TEMPERATURE INVERSION or GTI.

Scintillometer A type of photoelectric photometer used to measure high-altitude winds on the assumption that stellar scintillation is caused by atmospheric inhomogeneities being carried along by wind near the tropopause level.

Troposphere: The lowest portion of the atmosphere up to the tropopause. Varies in height from 60,000 feet at the equator to 40,000 feet over the poles.
Troposphere: The lowest portion of the atmosphere in which most weather occurs.

The tropopause marks the limit of the troposphere and the beginning of the stratosphere. The temperature above the tropopause increases slowly with height up to about 50 km.

Its altitude is somewhere between 28000 ft to 34000 ft (8.5 - 10.5 km), with its own distinctive tropopause level.

It lies between the polar tropopause at 11 km or so, and the tropical tropopause at around 18 km. In the winter, it descends to 30° latitude, but rises to 50°-60° in the summer.

Under the right conditions, severe thunderstorm tops can overshoot the EL by a considerable distance without reaching the tropopause. Conversely, non-severe thunderstorm tops can rise above the tropopause without overshooting the EL.

In general, winds are strongest just under the tropopause (except during tornados, hurricanes or other exceptional situations).
