Polar vortex Large-scale cyclonic circulation in the middle and upper troposphere centered generally in the polar regions. It is often called circumpolar vortex.

vortex - In its most general use, any flow possessing vorticity. More often the term refers to a flow with closed streamlines or to the idealized case in which all vorticity is concentrated in a vortex filament.

VORTEX PROJECT- Code name for an extensive government-funded research project on tornado formation carried out by the NSSL at the University of Oklahoma. VORTEX members used equipment rigs mounted on chase vehicles for data collection.

Tornado - A tornado appears as a violent funnel-shaped wind vortex in the lower atmosphere with upward spiralling winds of high speeds - spawned by severe thunderstorms. The tornado usually appears from a bulge in the base of a cumulonimbus cloud.
In mature stage the most prominent hallmark of a polar low are the spiral cloud bands often forming a clear eye at the the centre of the cloud vortex suggesting an analogy with tropical cyclones.
