Wind Aloft The wind speeds and wind directions at various levels in the atmosphere above the area of surface.

 


This friction can act to change the wind's direction and slow it down -- keeping it from blowing as fast as the wind aloft. Actually, the difference in terrain conditions directly affects how much friction is exerted.

Rawinsonde Radiosonde which is tracked by radar or radio-theodolite to measure the wind aloft.

LLJ - Low Level Jet. A strong wind aloft but confined to the lower levels of the atmosphere.

One element of this forecast is the route component which is the expected wind aloft parallel to the flight path.
