Meteorology Wind chill indexWind Gust

A sudden change in wind direction is commonly observed with the passage of a cold front.

Wind Direction - the direction from which the wind is blowing
Wind Shear - the local variation of the wind speed and/or direction in a given direction.

wind direction - The direction from which the wind is blowing. See also prevailing wind direction.

Wind Direction: The direction from which the wind blows. For example, a wind blowing from south to north is a southerly wind.

Wind Direction
The true direction from which the wind is blowing at a given location (i.e., wind blowing from the north to the south is a north wind). It is normally measured in tens of degrees from 0 to 360.

wind direction—The direction from which wind is blowing.
wind speed—Rate of wind movement in distance per unit time.
wind vane—An instrument to indicate wind direction.

Wind Direction- The direction from which the wind is blowing.
Wind Shear- Variation in wind speed and/or direction over a short distance. Shear usually refers to vertical wind shear, i.e.

"Wind Direction" 8 Points Of The Compass 16 Points Of The Compass Dir. Degs. Dir. Degs. Dir. Degs. Dir. Degs.

The wind direction most frequently observed during a given period.
Probability(6)
A chance, or likelihood, that a certain event might happen.

Another wind direction device is the windsock used at airports to show wind direction and strength. The wind fills the sock and makes it blow away from the prevailing wind.

(1) the wind direction fluctuates by 60° or more during the 2-minute evaluation period and the wind speed is greater than 6 knots; or
(2) the direction is variable and the wind speed is less than 6 knots.

Variable Wind Direction A condition when:
The wind direction fluctuates by 60° or more during the 2-minute evaluation period and the wind speed is greater than 6 knots; or
The direction is variable and the wind speed is less than 6 knots.

True wind direction The direction, with respect to true north, from which the wind is blowing. Distinguish from magnetic wind direction. In all standard upper-air and surface weather observations, it is true wind direction that is reported.

BACKING WIND- A wind direction that turns counterclockwise with height. An indication of cold air advection.

Smoke drift shows wind direction, wind vanes don't move.

Occurs when prevailing wind direction is from the same direction as the elevated terrain and often produces fair weather conditions.

Pre-Frontal TroughAn elongated area of relatively low pressure preceding a cold front that is usually associated with a shift in wind direction.Pre-Hurricane Squall LineIt is often the first serious indication that a hurricane is approaching.

WEATHER VANE Originally used as a wind vane, it is an instrument that indicates the wind direction. The name developed based on observations on what kind of weather occurred with certain wind directions.

Variable WindSame as Variable Wind Direction; a condition when
(1) the wind direction fluctuates by 60° or more during the 2-minute evaluation period and the wind speed is greater than 6 knots; or ...

This is due to the wind speed increasing rapidly with height and the wind direction either veering or backing rapidly with height.SupercoolTo cool a liquid below its freezing point without solidification or crystallization.

Under certain conditions cumulus clouds may be arranged in files, cloud streets, oriented approximately parallel to the wind direction. Changes in direction of illumination and in background cause modification of color and of apparent surface relief.

It contains the expected wind direction (to 8 points of the compass) and speed, waves heights, and significant weather conditions. They will also include information regarding structural icing and lake ice.

This can sometimes be inferred by a change in humidity (it should 'feel' more humid), and there may be a line of precursor cumulus development, with a change in visibility and wind direction perhaps.

Usually marks a sharp boundary in wind direction and is associated with cloudiness and shower or storm development. A trough can often denote an airmass boundary. This may be an area of sharp temperature or humidity gradients.

Any one of a class of diagrams designed to show the distribution of wind direction experienced at a given location over a considerable period; it thus shows the prevailing wind direction.

An approximate means of expressing wind direction that is usually quite accurate enough is to use points of the compass in the wind rose, a 16-point example of which is shown at the right. SSW is south-southwest, azimuth 202-1/2°.

wind vaneAn instrument used to determine wind direction.wind-chill factorThe cooling effect of any combination of temperature and wind, expressed as the loss of body heat. It is also called a wind-chill index.

It is most often applied to the seasonal reversals of the wind direction along the shores of the Indian Ocean, especially in the Arabian Sea, that blow from the southwest during one half of the year and from the northeast during the other.

wind vane"An instrument used to indicate or measure wind direction. It consists basically of an asymmetrical, elongated object mounted at its center of gravity about a vertical axis.

According to general internationally accepted usage, a change in wind direction in a counterclockwise sense (e.g., south to southeast to east) in either hemisphere of the earth; the opposite of veering. 2. According to widespread usage among U.S.

Derecho characterized by a short curved squall line oriented nearly perpendicular to the mean wind direction with a bulge in the general direction of the mean flow. Downburst activity occurs along the bulging portion of the line.

Horn cards were transparent disks with diagrams etched on each side to show average wind directions associated with pressure falls in a tropical cyclone.

A clockwise shift in the wind direction in the Northern Hemisphere at a certain location. In the Southern Hemisphere, it is counterclockwise. This can either happen horizontally or vertically (with height).

Describes the relationship of the horizontal wind direction to the pressure distribution. In the Northern Hemisphere, if one stands with one's back to the wind, the pressure on one's left is lower than the pressure on one's right.

wind shear: the rate of change of wind speed or wind direction over a short period of time and a short distance. Can occur vertically or horizontally.
wind vane: instrument used to measure wind direction.
zephyr any soft, gentle breeze.

Directional Shear - The component of wind shear which is due to a change in wind direction with height, e.g., southeasterly winds at the surface and southwesterly winds aloft.

BACKING WINDS: A counterclockwise change in wind direction. Backing winds with height are indicative of cold air advection (CAA).
BAR: An obstacle formed at the shallow entrance to the mouth of a river or bay.

Prevailing wind The wind direction most frequently observed during a given period.
Probability forecast A forecast of the probability of occurrence of one or more of a mutually exclusive set of weather conditions.

VEERING WINDS: A clockwise change in wind direction. Veering winds with height are indicative of warm air advection (WAA).
VIRGA: Precipitation falling from the base of a cloud and evaporating before it reaches the ground.

A vector quantity that describes wind motion in terms of wind speed and wind direction.

s is the sine of the angle between the wind directions at 500 mb and 850 mb (thus representing the directional shear in this layer).

It is reflected by the change in dew point and temperature, the shift in wind direction, and the change in atmospheric pressure. Accompanying a passage may be precipitation and clouds. May be referred to as "fropa." ...

Downslope Flow - Air that descends an elevated plain and consequently warms and dries. Occurs when prevailing wind direction is from the same direction as the elevated terrain and often produces fair weather conditions.

Anemorumbometer Russian anemometer combined with a vane to determine the wind direction.

Monsoon
(Monsoon Circulation) Wind in the general atmospheric circulation, typified by a seasonally persistent wind direction and by a pronounced change in the direction from one season to another.

QN-VECTOR - The measurement of convergence on either side of a line parallel to an average of the wind directions on either side of that line. Important for determining the development of squall lines and convergence based storm events.
