WIND VANE
An instrument that indicates the wind direction. The end of the vane which offers the greatest resistance to the motion of the air moves to the downwind position.

Wind Vane...The wind direction can be determined from the flow of smoke, or a flag, or even the unscientific method, wet finger? The wind vane can be easily made from tin, wood, or other material.

WSR-77D - Conventional, non-doppler radar developed and adopted by most weather service firms during the 1970's. Provides only reflectivity products.

Damping ratio A constant which describes the performance of a wind vane in response to a step change in wind direction. It is calculated from the relative amount of overshoot on two successive swings (half cycles) of a decaying oscillation.

WEATHER VANE Originally used as a wind vane, it is an instrument that indicates the wind direction. The name developed based on observations on what kind of weather occurred with certain wind directions.

The anemometer and wind vane should be placed in plane, open surroundings at a standard height. I cannot find specifications in the references available to me, but no doubt such standards exist, especially for reporting surface winds at airports.

In the history of weather recording, these are the most common structures for mounting wind vanes (sometimes called weathervanes).

The simplest type of this form consists of a flat plate, which is usually square or circular, while a wind vane keeps this exposed normally to the wind, and the pressure of the wind on its face is balanced by a spring.

Dines anemometer"A type of pressure-tube anemometer, named after the inventor, in which the pressure head is located on the windward end of the wind vane so that it is kept facing into the wind.

An example: For an obstruction of some 15 m in height (a typical large building), which is about 75 m from the site of the intended anemometer site, then the wind vane/cups would need to be about 25 m above ground level.
