DENVER -- Winter storms are pounding Colorado's mountains and more snow is expected.

 


Winter Storm Warning- Issued if the event will be entirely heavy snowfall.

Winter Storm: A large-scale disturbance, often hundreds of kilometres across, associated with a low-pressure system, or cyclone, that develops along a front during the cooler part of the year.

WINTER STORM Any one of several storm systems that develop during the late fall to early spring and deposit wintry precipitation, such as snow, freezing rain, or ice. Related terms: blizzard, ice storm, and nor'easter ...

Winter Storm Watch Issued when conditions are favorable for hazardous winter weather conditions to develop over part or all of the forecast area in the next 6-36 hours, but the occurrence is still uncertain.

Winter Storm Warning: This product is issued by the National Weather Service when a winter storm is producing very heavy snow. The criteria for this warning can vary from place to place.

WINTER STORM: A heavy snow event. In the Sierra Nevada below 7000 feet, a snow accumulation of 6 inches/12 hrs or 12 inches/24 hrs; and above 7000 feet, 8 inches/12 hrs or 18 inches/24 hrs.

Winter Storm Watch- A significant winter storm may affect your area, but its occurrence, location and timing are still uncertain. A winter storm watch is issued to provide 12 to 36 hours notice of the possibility of severe winter weather.

Winter Storm Warning - Issued when hazardous winter weather is occurring, imminent or highly likely over part or all of the area.

Winter Storm Warning - It's issued when hazardous winter weather is occurring or is likely over a specific area. Hazardous winter weather includes heavy snows, blizzards, ice storms, freezing rain, freezing drizzle and sleet.

While a winter storm may last a few hours to a few days on and off, lake effect snow will often produce snow continuously for up to 48 hours in a particular area.

A fall or winter storm that produces heavy but localized precipitation as a result of temperature differences between the air over snow-covered ground and the air over the open waters of a lake.

Issued for winter storms with sustained or frequent winds of 35 mph or higher with considerable falling and/or blowing snow that frequently reduces visibility to 1/4 of a mile or less. These conditions are expected to prevail for a minimum of 3 hours.

Blizzard: A winter storm which produces the following conditions for at least 3 hours: 1) sustained winds or frequent gusts to 35 miles per hour or greater 2) considerable falling and/or blowing snow reducing visibility to less than 1/4 mile.

BlizzardIncludes winter storm conditions of sustained winds or frequent gusts of 35 mph or more that cause major blowing and drifting of snow, reducing visibility to less than one-quarter mile for 3 or more hours.

Warnings state a particular hazard or imminent danger, such as tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, flash and river floods, winter storms, heavy snows, etc.

Lake Effect StormA fall or winter storm that produces heavy but localized precipitation as a result of temperature differences between the air over snow-covered ground and the air over the open waters of a lake.

It is a method for forecasting the amount of snowfall expected from a given winter storm system.

Blizzard WarningIssued for winter storms with sustained or frequent winds of 35 mph or higher with considerable falling and/or blowing snow that frequently reduces visibility to 1/4 of a mile or less.

Blizzard Violent winter storm, lasting at least 3 hours, which combines below freezing temperatures and very strong wind laden with blowing snow that reduces visibility to less than 1 km.

For example, a warning or watch may be issued based on either a forecast or observation of severe thunderstorms, flash flooding, river flooding, high winds, winter storms, etc.

PINEAPPLE CONNECTION - A warm and moist flow of air with origins from the tropics which precedes major winter storms. It can bring significant rain and snow to the Pacific Northwest.

WARNING: A public notice issued by the National Weather Service when a certain hazard (tornado, severe thunderstorm, flood or winter storm) is imminent.

The cold front associated with these storms can be studies for thunderstorm and tornado development, while the backside of a winter storm can be chased so a snow storm report can be done.
