zonal flow - (Also called zonal circulation.) In meteorology, the flow of air along a latitude circle; more specifically, the latitudinal (east or west) component of existing flow. Compare meridional flow; see zonal index.

ZONAL INDEX The measure of the strength of the westerly winds of the middle latitudes. It is expressed as the horizontal pressure difference between 35 degrees and 55 degrees latitude, or as the corresponding geostrophic wind.

Zonal Flow: Large-scale atmospheric flow in which the east-west component, i.e., flow parallel to the latitude lines, is much greater than the meridional (north-south) component. Compare with meridional flow.
