Absolute Block
A length of track in which no train or engine is permitted to enter while it is occupied by another train or engine.

Absolute Block A section of track protected by signals into which only one train at a time is permitted.

The principle of the British absolute block system of railway signalling is to facilitate the safe operation of a railway by preventing more than one train from occupying a defined section of route at the same time.

An absolute block allows for only train to occupy the block. Clear is a block clear of opposing and following trains and occupied is a block clear of opposing, but not necessarily preceding trains.

This system would be used at terminus stations to allow a locomotive to enter a platform already occupied by coaching stock, but would normally be used on through lines only when one goods train is following another. (see also absolute block).

Staff - Wooden stick which must be carried by each train traveling on single line section of railway branch line to maintain absolute block working and prevent possibility of head-on collision.
