Absolute Signal
A block or interlocking signal designated by an "A" market or the absence of a number plate.

There was an absolute signal on the main track at the south end of the yard. This signal was a head block, an absolute signal. It protected the entire route between the south end of South Hammond and the home signal at Dyer.

An absolute signal means that the train must stop and not proceed past the signal (absent special limited circumstances) until the aspect changes.

Normally indicated by a number plate and or a "G" plate on the mast. An Absolute Signal is a signal that shows "Stop" as its most restrictive indication. Indicated by absence of number plate on mast.
