alternating current (AC) is an electrical current whose magnitude and direction vary cyclically, as opposed to direct current, whose direction remains constant.

AC : Alternating current. Electric current which changes polarity in a regular cycle. It is the normal mains supply.

Alternating Current (AC)
An electric current that reverses its direction of flow at regular intervals. Each move from zero to maximum strength and back to zero is half a cycle.

AC (Alternating Current)
Electric current which repeatedly alternates (Cycles) from positive to negative a specified number of times per second (usually 60 in the U.S.).

AC (Alternating Current) Used by local utilities to deliver electrical power to substations. Also used by lightrail vehicles for HVAC, other utilities and sometimes for motive power.

AC (alternating current) — electric current which changes its direction of flow or movement back and forth through a wire.

Current-AC--Alternating Current. Most AF locomotives operate on alternating current but, with universal motors, can run on DC (direct current) too.

(UK: marshalling yard.)UoS Alternator Rotating machine for generating alternating current.

Alternating Current (AC) - Standard 110 Volt house hold current, or low voltage current used in model railroading, usually around 18 Volts; An electric current that reverses its direction of flow at regular intervals.

Regular O / O27 AC transformers are designed to work on 110 to 125-volt, 60-cycle, alternating current. Other combinations of voltage and frequency (cycles) require special transformers which are available through special order.

A direct current (or DC) motor is an electric motor that operates using electricity from a direct current (as opposed to alternating current, or AC). DC motors find use in a number of applications, including automobiles.

These readouts included an electronic speed display, electronic amp gauge and dynamic brake gauge, tractive effort gauge on alternating current propelled units, ...

Diodes have many uses such as to convert an alternating current to a direct current for power supplies and throttles and to route current in matrix circuits for switch machine controls.

Diode Voltage And Current Ratings ...

Computerized device in a locomotive that generates and regulates alternating current for the traction motors.
SP&S
Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway.

The newest type of locomotive in the CSX fleet. The A/C locomotive operates using alternating current and can move more tonnage faster.
AAR - Association of American Railroads ...

Some O Scale trains, like Lionel, MTH, and American Flyer, use alternating current (AC) to drive the motors. These trains use a three rail track with the two outer rails acting as a single wire and the center rail carrying the return circuit.
