The appearance of a fixed signal conveying an indication as viewed from the direction of an approaching train, or the appearance of a cab signal conveying an indication as viewed by an observer in the cab.

Signal Aspect The signal appearance, which conveys an indication as viewed either (1) from the direction of an approaching train, or (2) on the cab signal display unit in the engine control compartment.

Signal aspect: The information conveyed to a railroad vehicle operator by a block signal. Signals may use colored lights, position-significant lights or mechanical semaphores to generate various aspects.

This is another aspect of scenic model railroad lighting where you can really enhance the realism of your buildings if you use street lamps that actually work.

The following definitions are collected from various railroad books I have read, mostly dealing with the technical aspects of operating and maintaining railroads and rolling stock. These terms are not original with me, but have originated elsewhere.

As my personal struggle with layout design continues there is another aspect of freight yards that every modeler needs to consider. What are all those tracks for? A large yard is a maze of track and switches and the plan and purpose is hard to see.

The signals cannot be directly controlled by the dispatcher. Automatic signals normally display "Stop then Proceed" as their most restrictive aspect. Thus an automatic signal in CTC territory will always authorize a train to continue.
