Benchwork for the 4x8
Building our layout on top of a piece of plywood is the way that most of us got started in model railroading. But that piece of plywood can be awfully floppy if it is not supported adequately! ...

Benchwork from a distance.
Benchwork is the underframe of a layout; it is the structure which supports your subroadbed (which, in turn, supports your trackwork). There are several types of benchwork to consider.

Model Railroad Benchwork

Designing and building your model railroad benchwork should be fairly straightforward once you have a pretty good general idea about your theme and trackplan. As always, you should have a plan in mind before you proceed.

Start hanging some benchwork
To begin installing the benchwork start by determining how high you want you benchwork to be and mark a line on the wall at that height.

BENCHWORK Benchwork is any superstructure that supports trains or accessories. 1/2" to 3/4" plywood is recommended for surfaces. Particle board will sag out of place over time and waferboard/strandboard is weaker and difficult to work with.

Low benchwork offers a "birds-eye" overall view and a deep reaching distance. It is easy to reach in 36" on benchwork only 36" tall.

The next four chapters deal with benchwork and track, with the goal of making trains run reliably.

In the examples given here, a second "door" was added to the benchwork. Starting with some of the regular single-door layouts, the plans were expanded in various ways.
