boxcar (the American term; the British call this kind of car a "goods van") is a railroad car that is enclosed and generally used to carry general freight.

Regional railroad

When choosing a scale, its important to remember, that the larger the number in the proportions, the smaller the model will be. For instance, HO, is 1:87.1, or about half the size of O at 1:48.

Reefer: A refrigerator car. Similar in appearance to a boxcar but uses ice or mechanical cooling equipment.

Van
A goods wagon, but one that's fully enclosed with a roof and doors. Roughly analogous to the North American boxcar, only smaller.

Similar to a boxcar but has ice or mechanical cooling equipment.
Reefer Block - A freight train consist of refrigerator cars.
Regional Railroad - A railroad which is smaller than a major railroad but larger than a short line railroad.

For example, if a real boxcar is 500" long and you want your model in 1:100 scale, then the model should be 100 times smaller, 500"/100, or 5" long.
