Brake Cylinder

Brake Cylinder
Each vehicle has at least one brake cylinder. Sometimes two or more are provided. The movement of the piston contained inside the cylinder operates the brakes through links called "rigging".

Brake Cylinder Release Valve
The valve that initially bleeds brake cylinder pressure. If held open, it will bleed auxiliary and emergency reservoir pressures.

Brake Cylinder (Air Brake)
A cylinder containing a piston which is forced outwardly by compressed air to apply the brakes.

Brake Cylinder
A cast metal cylinder with a piston that is forced outward by compressed air when the brakes are applied and returned by a release spring when the brakes are released.
Brake Cylinder Release Valve ...

A valve fitted to a brake cylinder of a vacuum-braked train. The valve is designed so as to open and allow atmospheric air into the brake-operating system when only a small reduction of vacuum has occurred in the train pipe.

Modifies the Emergency Portion and provides for accelerated buildup of brake cylinder pressure during quick service applications.

Bail By moving the independent brake handle sideways, the engineer can release locomotive brake cylinder pressure that is due to an automatic brake application (a brake pipe pressure reduction).

A device on freight cars that maintains brake cylinder piston travel at a predetermined length to compensate for wear of brake shoes, wheels, and brake rigging.
