Can motor: a permanent magnet motor enclosed in a metal "can" (housing). A can motor is generally direct current (DC)-only.
Can Motor - A motor with a sealed motor casing (i.e., an unexposed motor armature). Can motors typically draw less amperage, and run cooler and smoother than their open frame counterparts.

This section covers universal AC/DC motors not DC only can motors. Can motors are a steel can with plastic ends. Universal motors are open on one side and have the wire wrapped field coil on the other and are much larger.
Think about this: a good part of the superior running we experience with can motors is because quality motors are more efficient and therefore run on less current. This means less voltage is lost between power source and motor.
Unfortunately, we still have the major problems that (a) it won't light the lamp with a very low current can motor engine, (b) it won't light when running power is not attached to the block, and (c) when it does work, ...
I dismantled the unit, removed the trucks from the chassis, and scrapped the can motor. The basic start will be a sawed down shell. I carefully sawed the shell down to the walkways, just behind the ends (leaving the ends intact).
