Class Ia
Includes the largest steam locomotives with four-wheel trailing trucks, articulated locomotives, those with wheelbases in excess of 20 feet, full length passenger cars and other long rolling stock.

Classification by motive power
Locomotives may generate their power from fuel (wood, coal, petroleum or natural gas), or they may take power from an outside source of electricity. It is common to classify locomotives by their source of energy.

Until 1955 a railroad with annual gross operating revenue of $1million or more. In 1955 the threshold became $3 million. By 1992, it had risen to $250 million. Currently at $256.4 million.

Grouping of railcars in a yard in accordance with train movement requirements, usually by destination station or junction

Classification Tracks
A system of tracks designed to facilitate classification switching by providing for the arrangement of freight cars according to their kinds, contents and destinations.

Class and Direction are listed on the schedule. A train is superior to trains of a lower class. Regular (scheduled) trains are superior to extras. For trains of the same class, direction will indicate which is superior.

Kettle
Any small locomotive, especially an old, leaky one. Also called teakettle and coffeepot.

Four President Class Heavy Pacific P7d locomotives #5301-5304 were rebuilt and had streamlined cowls added at B&O's Mt. Clair Shops in Baltimore. The tenders were rebuilt at the old BR&P Shops in DuBois, Pennsylvania.

During it's classic era Lionel designated locos with E-units as -E such as the 300E and 700E. Flyer never owned the right to use the name E-unit specifically, but their sequencer is the same principal interpreted differently.

The correct classification is Co'Co', but Co-Co is used more often.

The South African Class 38 is a locomotive of this type which has 3000v DC overhead electric supply as well as a 780 kW diesel engine. The UK Class 73 is another type but it collects electric power at 750v DC from a 3rd Rail to provide about 1500 h.

To see this in action, take a hopper class (ex. H2A) and multiply the number of prototype hoppers in that class by the compresson factor to get the number of models needed (ex. 6870 x .002864 = 19.677).

Locomotives are generally classified by the number of wheels they have. A 2-6-2 has one axle in front, three drive axles and one axle in the rear. Tenders are not included in the count. The locomotive in the picture is a 4-8-0.

Pullman travel was the measure of first class. In the diner you found starched white linen and a flower on every table. You were not surprised to fine Brook Trout on the menu or a finger bowl with a lemon wedge on the table just above your napkin.

Most Aristo models are modern era 40 and 50 foot standard gauge equipment. Some are painted for narrow gauge lines where appropriate. Aristo also manufactures the Delton Classics line, which represents 3 foot narrow gauge in F, G, or H scales.

Many O gauge sets can be found for $100 to $400. If that's too steep, consider purchasing a used set from a local hobby shop. Check the Yellow Pages or the dealer directory in the back of an issue of Classic Toy Trains for hobby shops near you.
