Curve

Model railroad Current of TrafficCut

The first thing to do is make sure you have easements going into your model train track curves.

However, even when the two couplings do fit together correctly on a gentle curve, they often don't lock closed.

Track Curves and Centers
Intermediate to Advanced
Track Curvature, Rolling Stock and Track Centers ...

But the curves are tight, a flex track fright
And off the rails it flew.
** ...

Reverse Curve
A piece of track which curves in one direction and then changes direction without any appreciable length of straight track between the two curves.
Reversed (referring to signal and points levers) ...

Curve, vertical. A curve in the profile of a track to connect intersecting grade lines and to permit safe and smooth operation of trains over summits and across sags.
Curved lead (turnout). The rail from heel of switch to toe of frog.
- D - ...

A curve of gradually increasing radius that makes the transition between a tangent or straight track and a fixed-radius curve.
Spot a car
To place a car in its designated position, as at an industry or on a station track.

A curve that gradualy increases or decreases. Also called an easement.
Traveling Card
1) Card given by a railroad Brotherhood to a man in search of employment.
2) An empty slip bill.

A curve to the left, another to the right, traversing the Chicago River on a large drawbridge that hasn’t opened in years, one more curve and then it is the IN. IN stands for Illinois Northern.

D. Lay curved stock rail
1. Gauge with three point track gauge at the curved frog rail and the track leading up to the points
2. Do not spike at points or guardrail ...

Easement curve. See Curve, easement.
Electrified Territory. That portion of the railroad consisting of main tracks, secondary tracks, sidings, ...

Turnouts- curved, straight? #4 or snap-switch? Powered or Insul-frog?
Available curved or straight, in many different sizes. The curved ones are measured by the radii of the two ends, while the straight ones go by a number, usually.

Transition Curve
A section of track with a gradually diminishing radius between the straight track and the circular portion of the curve.
Trestle ...

On segments of curved track, the vertical distance the outer rail is raised above the inner rail to counteract the centrifugal force of moving trains.
Superheater ...

Lead Curve The curve in a turnout interposed between the switch and the frog. LDMU (Light Diesel Multiple Unit) See DLRT. Level The condition of the track in which the elevation of the two rails transversely is the same.

Bezier Curves
RAILWAY SIMULATORS. A mathematical system for creating smooth curved tracks of gradually varying radii. The same system can be applied to roads, lines of trees, etc. In Trainz the word "spline" is used with the same meaning.

Speed and sharp curves don't go well together. Real trains would never be subjected to the curves we use on model railroads, and few freight trains travel faster than an automobile on the freeway.

The inner rail of a curve which is maintained at grade while the opposite or outer rail is elevated.
Low Side Gondola
A gondola car with sides and ends 36 inches high or less.

Also remember a curve in an ascending trestle makes the grade about twice as hard for the engine, depending on the tightness of the curve.

Pony Truck The casting and wheel set or wheel sets which make up the leading wheels of most steam locomotives, intended to guide locomotives through curves and switches, and used to properly distribute the weight of the locomotive.

Air bags are also designed to allow for shear during transition through curves.

Ruling Grade The particular point on the run at which the combination of grade and curve resistance makes the train pull hardest and , therefore, "rules" how heavy a load can be given to the locomotive.
S ...

This will maintain the locomotive at an even speed up and down gradients and around curves without altering the regulator of the controller.

This locomotive was designed for logging and other operations where heavy grades and sharp curves existed and prevented the use of side rod type locomotives.

Cant - Amount by which one rail of a curved track is raised above the other. Cant is ‘positive' when the outer rail is higher than the inner rail and ‘negative' when the inner rail is higher than the outer.

April 25, 2005 - Amagasaki rail crash, Amagasaki, Hyogo, Japan: A train derailed on sharp curve and smashed into an apartment building. 107 die, 549 are injured. Investigation showed the driver was speeding because of a slight delay.

A clearance diagram is oriented in an upright plane perpendicular (radial in a curve) to the centerline of a specified track and faces a stated timetable direction and is drawn in a stated scale.

Track transition curve: The gradual application of superelevation and tighter curve radius, calculated with reference to the anticipated line speed and the final curve radius, on the approach to a bend.

Relay An electrically operated switch Reverse loop A line which curves around and is attached back to itself to allow trains to be turned. Not often found on the prototype. Requires special wiring on two rail model systems.

Pushing against an empty or light car with more than 14 powered axles generated so much "in train" force that the empty or light car would simply be forced out of the train on curves.

Short cars look better on short curves dictated by restricted layout space. The case for a period railroad is strong. However, when your model railroad is set back in time, you are preserving history and this carries and obligation.

While Peco and Atlas track can be joined easily at turnouts or in straight sections, avoid mixing the two brands of track when you're laying out and joining curved sections of track.

Track & Turnouts: model railroad track is available as a variety of fixed radius curves and straight sectional pieces.

The front edges of the triangles must have identical smooth curves.
Mount the arcs in the corners of the room.. ( see diagram) Use the plywood arcs at the ceiling ( three inches from the ceiling), mid-way and bottom of the backdrop.

Wye - A switch or turnout with diverging paths that curve away in opposite directions, equidistantly from a single straight track.

Draw out your track plan on the foam. Be careful around switches and curves, the track needs to be smooth.
10
Roadbed under the track such as cork or spongy material that is sticky on both sides will cut down on noise.

There were 19" radius curves on this layout.
The 1978 layout had a six-track freight yard and a locomotive service track.

Radius-Minimum--This depends upon the track you are using. The radius of American Flyer curved track is about 19".
American Models code .148 sectional track uses a radius of 27".
Most scale modelers prefer a minimum radii upward of 36".

Splasher
On steam engines, the curved metal boxes that encase the driving wheels at the point where the wheel protrudes above the running plate.

All of the switches and other track work are also hand made by club members. The minimum curve radius is 6 feet (1.98m) and the maximum grade is three percent.

The position of track in the horizontal plane expressed as 'tangent' or 'curve.'
Alignment Control Couplers ...

Some models have been reshaped by shortening (so they will go around the sharper curves) or by changing proportions for more pleasing eye-appeal. Some models represent equipment that never existed anywhere.

This script, in the days before telephones, typewriters, and teletypes, was characterized by its swiftness, its bold flowing curves which connected one word with another, and its legibility. Ops were proud of their penmanship ...

of Stephenson and Gooch valve gear, but where the expansion link and radius link move up or down together in opposite directions to obtain reverse. The name arises from the fact that the expansion link is straight in this valve gear instead of curved ...
