Diesel locomotive sizes within O Gauge do not necessarily correspond to the car sizes. The standard diesels are a matter of precedents set by Lionel and Marx in the 1950s. While most Lionel diesels were 1/48, some were smaller.

 


The diesel era [helper operations on the South-end up to Altapass] were really interesting. I think the pushers at least for coal trains often tied on before Erwin--maybe Johnson City or even Kinsport.

Model diesel locomotives are an efficient balance of low cost and good operative qualities. Expect to pay about $25 to $40 for an entry level Athearn diesel locomotive.

RDC (Rail Diesel Car)

Prime Mover A V-type diesel with 8 to 20 cylinders rated at about 125 hp per cylinder if normally aspirated or 250 hp per cylinder if Turbo charged.

Normally found in a diesel-electric locomotive, where it is driven by the diesel engine to provide power for the electric motors and auxiliary services on the train.

DMU : Diesel Multiple Unit. A piece of rolling stock that is self powered and carries passengers or parcels. Each outward coach has a cab at the outer end which enables the driver to drive the unit in both directions without having to turn the unit.

Slug: A locomotive that contains traction motors yet lacks the diesel engine to create its own power, which is instead supplied by a connected 'mother' locomotive.

Carbody Another name for the hood-type diesel locomotive. Examples: F40PH, FP45, E and F units.

The firm has recently upgraded its product line with scale-detailed diesel locomotives and freight cars, die-cast metal rolling stock, and semi-scale, die-cast metal steam locomotives.

Stick with diesel locomotives. Steam locomotives are great for us old folks that remember them but generally because of their length they also create problems on curves and short turnouts (switches).

The steam-diesel transition period is historic and very popular. The covered-wagon diesels pulled trains of 40-foot boxcars. Two bay hoppers were common. LCL freight was a viable source of revenue.
