Draft Gear
The unit which forms the connection between the coupler rigging and the center sill. The purpose of this unit is to receive shocks incidental to train movements and coupling of cars, and so cushion the force of impact.

Spring slack is the movement beyond the free or lost motion brought about through compressing the draft gear springs.

The fact that most cabooses did not come equipped with cushioned draft gear in those days, you were also trying to prevent a sudden change in slack which could be devastating to the boys in the back.

Draft Gear - The pocket or box where the coupler is mounted on model railroad equipment.
Drawbar - The bar that connects the locomotive and its tender.
