DRAWBAR FLAGGING"Flagman leaning against the drawbar on the caboose, or standing near the caboose, to protect the rear end of his train, instead of going back "a sufficient distance" as rules require.

Drawbar
The bar that connects (couples) a steam engine to its tender.
Drawbar Force
Total tractive effort minus the tractive effort needed to move the locomotive. See Drawbar Horsepower ...

The drawbar pull, or traction, of your locomotive is affected by its weight, contact with the rail, traction tires, motor and the power available.

Drawbars are mounted in such a way that allows them to slide laterally. This allows for the coupled cars to be able to negotiate curves and turnouts. If there was no give, the cars would derail at every curve.

Drawbar or air hose.
Lung Doctor
Locomotive engineer who pulls out drawbars.

Drawbar
Any coupling, either a solid bar or couplers, between two pieces of rolling stock.

Drill
To switch cars in a yard. Also, the switch engine itself.

Bullhead A condition where both drawbar knuckles are closed, making the coupling impossible without opening one knuckle (amer. slang).

Drawbar Horsepower The total horsepower of a locomotive less the amount of horsepower that it takes to move the locomotive itself, the balance being available to pull the load.

This allows for higher tonnage trains as the drawbar tensions are lower than an equivalent train with head-end power only. Division A portion of the railroad designated by timetable. Dog Empty boxcar train.

Attached by a drawbar rather than a coupler, the tender carried fuel and water for the locomotive. It allowed trains to go further without stopping to refuel.

The prototype carries knuckles but no drawbars. Treat the broken coupler like a broken drawbar on a car. Take the car out of the train, place it in a siding and give the paperwork to the yardmaster.

Connections at both ends of the drawbar are also places for OHM BUGS to lurk. The tender almost always has less weight on the wheels to mash dirt on the rails. Yes, steamers have problems but they can be fixed! ...

It is normally understood to be the actual force on the locomotive's drawbar or rear coupler. When a bare figure for tractive effort is quoted without a speed qualification, this is normally for starting tractive effort, i.e.
