Freight All Kinds (FAK)

- Lead screw drives are devices containing a motor that turns a long threaded screw. The screw has a nut (carriage device) on it that travels back and forth as the screw is turned one way or the other.
Direct Drive - A system of power transmission in which there is a direct connection between the engine or motor and the driving wheels.
The circuits to drive GOW bulbs use a special ULN2003A driver IC (easily available from Jameco). The GOWs could have been driven with resistors and 2N2222A transistors, but the ULN2003A way costs less and is simpler to assemble.

In this model the rotary motion of the crank drives the slider, but it is also possible for the slider to drive the crank. For this to be effective, the crank should have a bit angular momentum to keep it spinning at the ends of travel of the slider.
The easy option is to use LGB 12000 spring loaded switch drives instead of 12010 electrical switch drives. The 12000 switch drive is now sold separately, but it also comes with the 12000 or 12100 small radius manual turnout.

A 2-6-2 has one axle in front, three drive axles and one axle in the rear. Tenders are not included in the count. The locomotive in the picture is a 4-8-0.
A type of geared steam locomotive used primarily by logging railroads. The two cylinders drive a jackshaft parallel with the axles. Power is transmitted to each truck through bevel gears and a driveshaft; rods couple the axles on each truck.
Constant cleaning of the track is probably the biggest thing that drives people away from track power. However, track-powered railroads are probably still the most common.
Now is also a good time to remove the leading truck so it's out of the way during the surgery. Just remove the front screw that holds the drive wheels in place, gently lift the cover, pull the truck out, and then replace the screw.
