Dry brushing
Use an old stiff-bristled brush - one that's been used and cleaned over and over again- or buy an inexpensive hog-bristle brush at a craft store.
Dry Brushing - A weathering technique where paint is lightly applied to a material's raised surfaces using a nearly "dry brush," which has been wiped off, after having been dipped in a very minute amount of paint.
Dry brushing is a technique which employs only a small amount of paint, usually to achieve the effect of weathering. To dry brush, take a dry paint brush and apply a small amount of paint to it.
Dry Brushing or Drybrushing
Dry-brushing is a method to subtly accentuate the high points on the surface of a model and create the illusion of depth.
Dry brushing: dip a brush in paint, wipe it off on a paper towel, and then use the nearly dry brush to simulate rust and grime. This works best when applied in very thin lines.
Dry Brushing : A technique where an almost dry brush is used to highlight details on a model with paint. Can be used for weathering models or for scenic work, rocks and stone walling, for example.

This is called "dry brushing". I then added some of this to the tops of the cross beams and then rubbed it in with my fingers. I repeated adding paint and rubbing it in until it looked right. I also added some to the ties.
For chainmail, paint the figure a gray steel color. Wash with black, highlight with aluminum or silver. You can use dry brushing for plat and chain mail. For bronze armor, wash with black or dark chocolate brown. Highlight with gold.
The mortar lines were created by treating the brick with a very diluted wash of Doc Obriens white weathering powder and then dry brushing with some AccuFlex dark Tuscan Oxide Red. I think it came out pretty good.
