Flat Cars
A flat car is a rolling platform for cargo to large for boxcars or gondolas. Some flat cars are interesting in themselves. Others are fascinating for the loads they carry.

flatcar (also flat car) is a piece of railroad rolling stock that consists of an open, flat deck on four or six wheels or a pair of trucks (US) or bogies (UK).

A quick scan shows just a couple of FLAT cars in the inbound tracks waiting to be humped. We would then start putting the overflow MORT's on top of the cars in the FLAT track.

Flat cars can load or unload a wide variety of freight at the team track. Machinery, a new fire engine for the town, stone blocks from a local quarry, lumber either in or out are some possibilities.

With respect to freight traffic, it is most often used for the carriage of highway trailers (TOFC) or containers on flat cars (COFC).

The other three waybills are for a coal hopper, a general service gondola, and a flat car. This seems to be a fairly reasonable distribution for a furniture manufacturer in the mid-1950s.
