S-Trax Freight Yard Layout
These layouts use a basic freight yard / shunting system and expand upon it, using the S-Trax track system. S-Trax is compatible with American Flyer track.
Freight yard.
Garden Railroad
A form of model railroading which is usually done outdoors. First started in Europe and now one of the fastest growing segments of model railroading world wide.
A freight yard (or yards) where complete trains are made-up or broken-up by shifting cars with a switcher locomotive, or by means of a hump.

The freight yard was located on the southern end of Elm and Canal Streets in Manchester, just south of all of the Amoskeag Mills behind Noyes Tires. You can see the area from Route 3 across the river.

The 1978 layout had a six-track freight yard and a locomotive service track.
This was the second move for the 1978 layout. It had been shortened to 10 feet long. The "engineer" is the son of a co-worker visiting the railroad in 1982.

While you are getting some cars ready, take a few photographs of freight cars along your local railroad, or in a nearby freight yard.

These were the parts that were greased regularly and we would expect them to be greasy always. Over weathering can make the gates look simply "grimy" and "uncared for". This also can be a pleasing effect in older freight yards etc.
A term used in the USA, and possibly other countries. An exchange track is a track in a freight yard where full and empty freight wagons are exchanged between trains of two or more different railroad companies. See also "Team Track".
Freight or cargo trains are loaded and unloaded in freight yards, by using cranes.
Locomotive operations
When inactive, locomotives are housed in a train depot.
