Train Frequency
One last issue to consider in designing and operating a model railroad yard is the frequency of trains.

Radio frequency, or RF, is a frequency or rate of oscillation within the range of about 3 Hz and 300 GHz. This range corresponds to frequency of alternating current electrical signals used to produce and detect radio waves.
.....

Frequency
(Hertz / Hz) The number of times per second an alternating current reverses its direction.

The elementary explanation is as follows: In AC systems, the flow of electricity Alternates or reverses frequently (the frequency, expressed in cycles, Hertz, Hz, etc.).

Channel A specified frequency for communication between train and dispatcher or 2 trains. The channel numbers (07 thru 97) are shorthand methods of designating assigned radio frequencies for transmission.

They tell us that as far as the transportation industry goes, railroads have less frequency of injuries per man hour than the rest. So with that information comes the belief by some managers that railroading is safer than other transportation jobs.

In addition to their voltage and frequency rating, all transformers also bear a wattage rating. The wattage of a transformer corresponds to its capacity, or ability to furnish power.

The low frequency bass and the higher frequency sounds may be lost. There are certain ways to enhance these frequencies even when the volume is low. For example the "bass boost" controls on many small stereo systems are just for that purpose.

A device which detects the frequency of the engineman's movements and initiates an air brake application when the required frequency of such movement is not maintained. See Deadman Control.
Alley
A clear track for movement through a yard.

The booster supplies your track with constant voltage and amperage, and the DCC system encodes signals (usually via high frequency AC) and sends them along the rails as well. Each locomotive (or switch machine, etc) has a decoder.

Each pair of units, radio transmitter and radio receiving system, operates on a discrete frequency so that several radio control units can be operated at the same time and location without conflicting with one another.# ...

DOT grants a safety rating to a carrier based primarily on a driver safety program audit and accident frequency. Applicable ratings are satisfactory, conditional and unsatisfactory.

Alertness Device
A device that initiates a penalty brake application when the engineer does not maintain the required frequency of movement. - A "deadman" type of safety device.

Vigilance Device See deadman VVVF Variable Voltage Variable Frequency traction drive system. Used where 3-phase AC motors are provided on rolling stock. For more information see the Electric Traction Pages Page.
