The earliest narrow gauge railroad in Maine was the Sandy River Railroad built in 1879. These lines found use from hauling slate and lumber, to moving tourists to seaside resorts and mountain lodges. Unfortunately, the slim gauge lines peaked early.
Gauge (often confused with "Scale" - see below) is the term used to describe the distance between the 2 rails of track - usually 4 ft 8-1/2in ("standard gauge") in the prototype.

Gauge the thickness of the coating with a magnetic thickness gauge. Place the magnet flush against the surface of the area you are testing. Touch the gauge to the magnet and pull away. Ease of separation demonstrates a thick layer or layers.

Broad gauge
Generally speaking, any railway tracks that are wider than standard gauge. The term has certain historical meaning in the UK, however. Brunel felt that the standard rail gauge of 4' 8.
Gauge 1 track is 10 to 15% too wide to represent 3 foot narrow gauge in G and H scales, but it is used anyway, because "close enough is good enough". The correct scale to use 45 mm track for 3 foot gauge is 1:20.3 (F Scale).

Lighter gauge coat hanger wire is easier to work and will allow the forming of smaller loops. Heavier wire will be more rigid though.
