Hardshell Make a frame, as above, using cardboard instead of screening. That is, build wooden supports and make a lattice or web of 1" wide pieces of cardboard over it. Staple the pieces down on the corners.

Westcott's "L-girder" technique of building strong and lightweight benchwork to support layouts is widely followed in the United States today, largely because of its flexibility and economy, as is his "hardshell" method of building landscapes.
