Hi-rail: broadly speaking, hi-rail refers to modeling prototype railroading as accurately as possible using toy trains on a layout with realistic scenery.
Homasote: A pressed paperboard often used for roadbed on a model or toy train layout.

 


HI-RAIL
While the term Hi-rail is often used synonymously with American Flyer tinplate, that is really a misnomer. Hi-railers lie somewhere within that vast range between scale and tinplate.

Hi-rail, 2-rail, AC and DC
Though classic toy train makers like Lionel, K-Line and MTH manufacture both scale and semi-scale trains, they are considered to be O gauge rather than pure scale. Classic trains run on three-rail track.
