For HO modelers who are ballasting track for the first time, why not try my method. Don't use granulated stuff, just use flock material, similar to woodland scenics ground cover.

HO scale is the most popular, and is built at 1:87.1 of the prototype. When written alone, it signifies standard gauge. HOn3 is a narrow gauge, still at the 1:87.1 proportion, but the distance between the rails is smaller.

HO scale is 1:87, and is ideal for many new beginners, as well as many other hobbyists. It is small enough to fit well with many different layouts, yet big enough for the average person to handle, and they show well.

You and I model in HO scale. The thirty in prototype also work for us. Just a different set of numbers to apply. 30 divided by 87 equals 0.345 inches which multiplied by 25.4 gives us 8.8 millimeters.

This is an HO scale sawmill that we built for a model railroad logging diorama. It is entirely built from scratch, stripwood, paper, plastics, and balsa. We used stripwood for the posts and trusses, and scribed paper for the roofing.

N scale model train sets have the advantage of taking up less space than the HO scale model train sets. N scale model trains are in fact 54.5 percent the size of equivalent HO scale model trains.

For example, an HO scale locomotive is approximately 1/87th the size of a real locomotive. Your choice of scale will have a big impact on the type of railroad you'll be able to build in the available space.
