Homosote

Homosote: a pressed paperboard often used as subroadbed. Available in building supply stores.

Homosote, 4' long and only as wide as the two track mainline was glued to this subroadbed. To be sure the Homosote came exactly to the ends of the modules, we made a random crosscut in it on my bandsaw and slid the square ends out towards the edges.

In my own situation, I was modeling in "N" Scale and started with a 4′ x 4′ piece of plywood with homosote on top and built my first layout on it.

I use Homabed which is homosote with a profile cut on each side. This helps but I don't think it is enough for a mainline. So I use a V bit in my router and cut a freehand groove along the outside of each track.

You can paint the table with flat brown paint now or you might want to put a sheet of Homosote on it. The table is ready for your track now! I hope these instructions and illustrations will assist you in the construction.

Using 2’ brads and wood glue, secure the sub roadbed to the risers, making sure to sink the brads to keep the surface smooth for your final roadbed. Once everything is the way you like it, add your choice of roadbed, be it cork, Homosote®, ...

In model railroading wood, cork, plywood, Homosote and other materials are used.
Road Engine - Locomotive used regularly for mainline service.
Road Names - Names of various railroad companies in the United States and Canada.
